Porto Rafti

Porto Rafti is a seaside resort town about 15 miles or so from Athens. It is another one of those places that I’ve only heard of and visited by chance because my friend has a friend who lives there.

Anyway, my friend Janice and I had not seen each other for over 9 years. She lived in Dubai and I live in Vegas, She asked what our plan was that summer in terms of travel and I responded that we were staying stateside. She said she was going to France with her boyfriend (southwestern and then Paris for a U2 concert) and then to Athens to visit a friend while her boyfriend would head back to Dubai. She said we could meet in Athens if I was interested. I was and hubby gave the go ahead. I roped another friend to come with me since I wanted to extend my stay for a few days after Janice leaves.

We arrived on a Thursday in mid-July. The party atmosphere was palpable. It was actually quite contagious. Music blaring from the bars and coffee shops as well as from cars cruising by. Even now, when I hear Pitbull’s “I Know You Want Me”, I’m transported back to that summer in 2009. It seemed everywhere we went, they’re playing that particular song.

Going around Porto Rafti with Alexis and his girlfriend was great. Obviously, they know where to go. They took us to nice seafood restaurants which were surprisingly cheap. We also went to hole in the wall type of restaurants that served good food. Even in Athens, we ate cheap. One night, we thought the waiter gave us the wrong tab – €22 for a dinner for 5 was just too good to be true. Well, it was true.

Aranjuez

If not for my friend who grew up in Aranjuez, I would never have heard of it.  Well, maybe would have read about it but not actually go there. It turned out, on our trip to Spain back in summer 2015, our first stop was Aranjuez. My friend was spending that entire summer in Spain so we also spent a few days of our vacation with them. After all, nothing beats having a local show you around.

Aranjuez is a suburb south of Madrid.  It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are famous for their strawberries which are tiny but very tasty.

My friend’s parents live in the apartments which used to be the knights quarters. Or something like that. Our running joke is that she used to be a princess. They do have a gorgeous view. I mean, their balcony is right across the palace and its gardens.

While our hotel served breakfast, though on the expensive side, each morning we went to  the local churros shop. It’s very popular with the locals. Everyone eat their churros standing up but it is so worth it. Imagine, eating fresh churros with a cup of very thick hot chocolate!
